South Carolina Vehicle Registration
New South Carolina residents have 45 days after establishing residency to register and title their vehicles in the state, and the process runs through your county as much as the state.
SC charges an annual property tax on vehicles collected through the county, plus state registration fees, so the total cost depends on your county and your vehicle's value. Fees and rules change, so verify current amounts before you go.
What do you need to do first?
The 45-day rule
Vehicles must be registered in South Carolina within 45 days of establishing residency. Before you can register, you need an SC driver's license (or be in the process of getting one) and auto insurance from a carrier licensed to do business in SC.
The 45-day clock is separate from the driver's license 90-day clock, so treat them as two deadlines on your checklist.
The county property tax on vehicles
South Carolina assesses an annual personal-property tax on vehicles based on your county's millage. The county assesses the vehicle, sends the tax bill, and you pay the county treasurer before you can get the new plates and registration.
The tax is due every year after that, so factor it into your budget as an annual cost, not a one-time fee. York County publishes its vehicle tax schedule and rates; confirm yours with the county assessor.
What to bring to register
Take your paid property-tax receipt, the out-of-state title (or proof of ownership and a lien release if financed), proof of SC insurance, your SC driver's license, and payment for the state fees to the county office or SC DMV branch that handles registration.
The SC title is mailed after the out-of-state title is cleared through the national title verification system, so keep your temporary paperwork until the title arrives.
State fees
South Carolina charges state registration and title fees on top of the county tax, including an infrastructure maintenance fee for vehicles being registered in the state for the first time. For a standard passenger vehicle the total state fee is commonly around $305, but the exact number depends on the vehicle and the year, and the fee structure changes, so verify the current amount with the SC DMV.
Where should you verify the details?
These are the official agencies and providers for this topic. Rules, fees, and availability change, so always confirm the current requirements with the source itself before you act.
